American Council Responds to Governor Newsom’s Remarks on Prayer

Sacramento, CA — In the aftermath of the tragic shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, Governor Gavin Newsom commented that, “They were literally praying as shots rang out.”

The American Council is deeply grieved not only by the horrific violence that claimed the lives of innocent children, but also by the dismissive tone of the Governor’s words. Prayer is not a weakness to be scorned or dismissed. For centuries, Americans have turned to God in moments of national heartbreak, from presidents calling for days of prayer in wartime to communities bowing their heads after tragedy.

Mockery cannot mend broken hearts, but prayer invites the God who can. Far from being outdated or useless, prayer is the cry of the human soul and the wellspring of hope for millions of Americans.

We call on our leaders to honor the faith of grieving families and communities, not belittle it. We also believe prayer should compel action. We urge lawmakers to pursue policies that protect children, strengthen families, and uphold the value of every human life.

Most importantly, we will continue to pray for the families in Minneapolis, for wisdom among our leaders, and yes, even for Governor Newsom, that his heart would be turned toward the God who hears and heals.
