American Council Saw Big Gains for Endorsed Candidates

The organization saw 80% of endorsed candidates win.

Although the Midterms proved challenging for national races, the American Council’s focus on local races proved to be significant. Council-endorsed candidates across the state performed extremely well, with major wins in Shasta County, Sacramento County, Placer County, Kern County, and San Diego County. With the election certified, 80% of American Council-backed candidates have won their races, an unprecedented milestone.

In Placer County, ~ 90% of its candidates won their election. In the red county, through the American Council and their partnerships, they helped manage almost 45 campaigns, distributed over 45,000 voter guides, sent 147,000 campaign texts, and distributed mailers, digital ads, and email campaigns to thousands of households in support of Council candidates.

The L.A. Times reported that despite disappointing election results across the nation and the state, organizations like the American Council bankrolled big wins in the state.

Conservative groups such as the American Council and Moms for Liberty recruited and endorsed dozens of candidates across the state and helped bankroll wins in Placer, Sacramento and San Diego counties, turning red parts of California even redder by way of school board races.

While American Council candidates saw big gains across the state, candidates and incumbents who ran against the American Council saw major losses.

Ken Cooley, a Democrat representing the 8th Assembly District, spent millions of dollars on ads attacking Joshua Hoover, an American Council candidate. Littered across TV, social media, and mailers — Asm. Cooley made the point that Hoover was supported by the American Council. Hoover won.

Jen Brookover, a progressive school board candidate in Rocklin, California — ran on a platform where she promised to combat the American Council and other religious communities in the region. She ended her race in last place, trailing every other candidate by large margins. Tiffany Saathoff, an incumbent who the American Council helped get elected in 2020, credited much of her success to the American Council. She was the highest vote-getter out of 6 candidates, beating Brookover by ~5% points.

“The American Council has been one of my greatest supporters since day one.  They consistently take action and put their money where their mouth is, through financial donations, mail pieces, and knocking doors on my behalf.  I am deeply grateful for their endorsement and the American Council’s continued willingness to stand up for what’s right.”

The American Council is poised to double its investment leading up to the 2024 election, focusing on school boards, city councils, county boards, and state seats across California.
