American Council Statement on the Veto of Assembly Bill 957

Sacramento, California — American Council President Tanner DiBella issued the following statement after California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed Assembly Bill 957. If passed, judges would have been required to consider giving custody to parents who affirm their child's perceieved gender in a custody battle.

"We are elated to see Assembly Bill 957 vetoed. This bill would have devestated families by ripping children away from parents with a religious or moral conviction on gender and identity. If passed, A.B. 957 could have charged parents with child abuse and would have weaponized the judicial branch against families. Thank you to the thousands of Californians who wrote letters, met with legislators, and mobilized their local community. Today is a reminder that the people still have a voice."
