The American Council Mobilizes Thousands to Get Youth Drag Show Cancelled on School Campus
Loomis, CA: On February 12th, a drag show featuring underage student dancers was announced at Roseville High School in Placer County, California. Hosted by the Landing Spot, a LGBTQ+ youth ministry of Loomis Basin Congregational United Church of Christ in Loomis, the show encouraged students to participate and dance for ‘an eager audience’ and implored attendees to bring cash to ‘tip’ the young dancers. The event was scheduled for Friday, March 31st in the Roseville High School Theater.
The American Council, a family advocacy group in California – immediately notified their community network, resulting in thousands of concerned parents and community members sending emails to the school administration, demanding the event be removed from campus. Local churches, community leaders, and advocacy groups quickly joined the efforts, citing underage drag as an inappropriate activity for children. Within 48 hours, the Roseville Joint Union School Board announced the organizers had been asked to relocate their event.
“We want to thank the Roseville Joint Union Board of Directors for hearing our concerns,” said Tanner DiBella, president of the American Council. “Any event that rallies underage children to participate in provocative activities should never be encouraged. Exposing minors to explicit content does not build healthy families or communities.”
DiBella continued that “If an adult wants to engage in drag, that is completely their business. But, any gathering that encourages students on a public school campus to engage in inappropriate activity puts our youth at risk.”
