Evangelicals + Catholics to Host Prayer Vigil as California State Senate Honors Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

The Prayer Vigil is scheduled for Monday, June 5th at 2:00PM on the West Steps of the California State Capitol

SACRAMENTO,CA: On Monday, June 5th, at the request of California State Senator Scott Wiener — the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI) are scheduled to be honored on the floor of the California State Senate.

The group garnered national controversy following an invitation from the L.A. Dodgers to be honored for the "contributions" to the community. Masquerading as a Catholic order, the “Sisters” mock and degrade Christian belief and symbols. Most recently, the group hosted their annual “Hunky Jesus” drag show in which men dressed as Jesus perform strip-teases, pole dances, and sex-simulations.

The American Council, The California Family Council, and the California Catholic Conference, three of the largest religious advocacy groups in the state, have announced a joint Prayer Vigil on the steps of the California State Capitol on June 5th. Evangelical and Catholic leaders are expected to pray and sing hymns together.

A Statement from American Council President, Tanner Di Bella, reads: “I am troubled that the California State Senate would honor a group characterized by its disdain for an entire religious community. Ridiculing faith and religious beliefs has no place in California. These actions send a troubling message to people of faith by our state leaders: you are not welcome here."

The Prayer Vigil is on Monday, June 5th at 2:00PM on the West Steps of the California State Capitol. A flyer can be downloaded and distributed here.

Please note: the vigil is not a political rally or gathering. Please do not bring protest signs or wear politically divisive clothing. This is a sacred prayer gathering of prayer and worship.
