The American Council Calls on Governor Newsom to Reject Partisan Redistricting Plan

Sacramento, CA – The American Council has formally urged Governor Gavin Newsom to oppose the state’s proposed redistricting plan, warning that it threatens the integrity of California’s democracy by prioritizing political gain over fairness and transparency.
In a letter delivered to the Governor’s office this week, Tanner DiBella, President of The American Council, emphasized that California’s legacy has always been built on fairness and opportunity, regardless of background. The letter warns that partisan-driven maps fracture trust in the democratic process at a moment when Californians are already weary and divided.
“When maps serve political gain instead of the people, trust in our democracy is fractured,” DiBella wrote. “At a time when Californians are weary and divided, we need transparency and fairness.”
The letter highlights Governor Newsom’s frequent framing of California as a moral compass for the nation, challenging him to uphold integrity over political advantage. The American Council asserts that maps should reflect neighborhoods and communities rather than political ambition.
“This is a moment to prove that California is not defined by partisan maneuvering but by integrity, fairness, and shared trust,” DiBella added.
The American Council is calling on Governor Newsom to reject the current proposal and instead champion a process that restores trust, reflects California’s diverse communities, and strengthens the state’s shared future.
