January 3, 2026: American Council President, Pastor Tanner DiBella, released the following statement:
President Trump announced that the United States carried out targeted military strikes in Venezuela and that President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were removed from the country. The administration has stated that Maduro will face long-standing federal charges in the United States and that the U.S. military will temporarily oversee conditions in Venezuela while a transition of leadership is pursued.
For years, Maduro’s government has been accused by international bodies and human rights organizations of suppressing democratic processes, violently repressing political opposition, and presiding over systemic human rights abuses. The United States has also maintained criminal indictments against Maduro dating back to 2020, alleging large-scale drug trafficking and corruption. Maduro has denied these charges.
What must not be lost in this moment is the people of Venezuela. Millions have already endured poverty, displacement, fear, and instability. Whatever unfolds next will affect families, churches, and communities that have little control over the decisions being made above them.
In the days ahead, we encourage you to pray for the people of Venezuela, for the protection of the innocent, and for a future marked by peace and genuine freedom. Pray for leaders in the United States that decisions would be guided by wisdom, humility, and restraint.
We pray that justice would prevail in Venezuela, and that President Nicolás Maduro would be held accountable for the violence and atrocities committed against his own people.
